Extension, Grange Terrace, Bo'ness

We were appointed to prepare a design for alterations and an extension to a traditional,  detached, stone property in the Bo’ness Conservation Area.

Our brief was to improve the flow, daylighting levels in the main living spaces and improve the relationship of the house to the south facing garden.

We have taken a contemporary approach to the design to create a proposal that contrasts with the existing house whilst also complimenting it.

The design will greatly improve the ‘flow’ and usability of the house, creating a bright, open and practical space that links the existing rear rooms and hallway and provides a much improved relationship with the garden.

The existing window opening to the rear music room/study has been enlarged to allow for a better relationship with the extension. Glazed double doors would allow for the flexibility for this room to be closed off or opened up to the extension depending on our client’s requirements.

The new enlarged openings along the back wall of the existing house form a symmetrical balanced pattern that pick up on the symmetry of the floor plan. This symmetry has been taken through to the extension and external facade.

The roof is expressed as a ‘floating’ plane above the high level strip glazing.
