Villa annex, Algarve

A Lisbon hotelier has asked us to look at extending their holiday villa in an exclusive walled development in Portugal’s Algarve.  Rather than propose an extension our design solution was to design a separate building within the large garden grounds which provides additional bedroom and bathroom accommodation.  Living accommodation is provided externally.
As part of the cooling strategy the property has two roofs.  The upper roof is a louvred screen which provides shade and a ventilated space above the main concrete deck which in turn provides a heavy thermal mass.  This absorbs the heat from the sun during the day and releases it during the night.
